About NSCS

What is NSCS?

From the nscs.org:

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is an honors organization which recognizes outstanding academic achievement among first and second year college students and encourages members to develop leadership skills through community service.

The Society was founded in 1994 at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. NSCS has active chapters at 218 colleges and universities nationwide, in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Chapters are involved in service to their campus and local communities, as well as scholastic and social activities.

NSCS members are also eligible to participate in a variety of activities sponsored by the Society. Scholarships and awards, leadership development activities, service programs, community building and information sharing are the focus of activities organized nationally.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Does my local NSCS chapter have anything to offer me?

A:  Absolutely!  NSCS is not the kind of honor society that inducts new members and never provides them with any other opportunities.  At weekly chapter meetings, members learn about exciting events that benefit the local community.  In addition, member benefits including discounts, scholarships, and conventions are offered through NSCS.  Come to meetings or contact one of the officers to learn more!

Q:  How was I nominated?

A:  Truman State University provided the national office with a list of students who meet the eligibility
requirements for NSCS membership (top 20th percentile and a minimum 3.4 GPA before the completion of
sixty credit hours).  NSCS does not know the specific GPAs earned by members.

Q:  Does my membership expire?  Do I have to pay dues each year?
A:  No.  NSCS membership is a lifetime membership once the $75 one-time-only dues have been paid.  However, certain attendance requirements must be met to be considered an active member.  More information on this program will be posted on this site during the fall.

Q:  Do I have to attend every chapter meeting?
A:  No.  We understand that many of our members are involved in several activities, so we encourage
you to come to as many meetings as they are able to.  Members can begin attending meetings at any point in
the semester; we always welcome new faces.  Meeting attendance is not required for participation in NSCS
 events.

Q:  Is there a penalty for not attending meetings?
A:  In order to be eligible to receive NSCS honor cords for graduation, seniors must attend at least five meetings
and one NSCS event.  If seniors are unable to make it to meetings, they may substitute one event for every two
meetings missed.  Also, see above “Does my membership expire?”

Q:  How can I find out more about the scholarships and opportunities available through NSCS?
A:  Attend a chapter meeting or visit the national website site.  Keep in mind that NSCS members who are
active in their local chapters are more likely to get selected for scholarships and opportunities.

If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of our chapter officers.
